CrossFit took a while to find its footing in Marrakech, but the scene is alive now. A handful of gyms offer WODs, though quality varies a lot. Some places call it CrossFit when it's really just circuit training with a barbell. Others are legit but pack too many people into classes for real coaching to happen. And then there are gyms with decent equipment but coaches who don't know how to program or teach the movements properly.

Real CrossFit is a technical sport. Weightlifting, gymnastics, rowing. each discipline requires specific learning. A badly executed snatch isn't just ineffective, it's dangerous. A kipping pull-up without the base strength destroys shoulders. That's why finding a gym that takes coaching seriously matters so much.

What CrossFit Looks Like at Dune Training

At Dune Training, our CrossFit is the real deal. We program WODs that blend weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio. One day it's squat cleans at 70 kg chained with toes-to-bar. The next it's a 20-minute AMRAP with thrusters, pull-ups, and rowing. The programming is structured and progressive. not random stuff the coach makes up on the spot.

Programming follows 6-week cycles. Each cycle has a focus: one month it's weightlifting (technique work plus strength on the clean, snatch, jerk), the next it's gymnastics (strict pull-ups, handstand push-ups, muscle-up progressions), another it's conditioning (rowing, running, SkiErg, chipper WODs). Skill work is built into the warm-up. 10-15 dedicated minutes before the main WOD.

Equipment Matters

Doing CrossFit without proper gear is like playing tennis without a racket. We've got quality Olympic barbells, bumper plates (5 to 25 kg), gymnastics rings, pull-up rigs, GHDs, plyo boxes at different heights (50, 60, 75 cm), kettlebells from 4 to 48 kg, climbing ropes, Concept2 rowers, medicine balls, and dumbbells. Everything you need for varied, progressive WODs.

The floor is specialized rubber to absorb barbell drops. Bars are maintained regularly. proper grip, smooth bearings. We don't cut corners on maintenance because worn-out equipment is an injury risk and a degraded experience. It's not the kind of detail you notice consciously, but your body feels it every session.

Beginners and Seasoned Athletes Welcome

Every WOD is scalable. Can't do strict pull-ups yet? You work with a band. Prescribed weight too heavy? We adjust. The idea is everyone does the same workout at their own level. Our coaches are there for exactly that. and with 12 people max per class, they actually have time for each person.

For complete beginners, we recommend starting with Iron Muscle and HYROX classes for 2-3 weeks before jumping into CrossFit. That gives you time to nail the basic movement patterns. squat, deadlift, press. before adding the speed and complexity of CrossFit. We don't throw you into a WOD with snatches on day one. Progression is logical and safe.

Benchmarks: Where Do You Stand?

In CrossFit, benchmark WODs are how you measure progress. Fran (21-15-9 thrusters and pull-ups), Murph (1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, 1 mile run), Grace (30 clean and jerks at 61 kg). At Dune Training, we retest these benchmarks every 2-3 months so you can see your progress in numbers. It's satisfying to watch your Fran time drop from 8 minutes to 5 minutes over a few months.

We also track PRs (personal records) for every athlete. Your 1RM clean, your 1RM squat, your best 2 km row time. This data lets coaches tailor loads and goals specifically for you. It's data-driven coaching, not guesswork.

The CrossFit Schedule at Dune

We run multiple CrossFit slots per week, spread between morning and evening. The Weightlifting class is a great add-on if you want to sharpen your snatch or clean and jerk technique outside of WODs. it's 45 minutes dedicated to Olympic lifting technique and strength. Check our schedule on the Dune Training website to find the right slot.

Location and First Class

We're in the heart of Gueliz, 60 Avenue Mohammed V, Marrakech. Easy to get to by car or tram. The first trial class is free. come test a WOD and see if it's your thing. No commitment, no pressure. Just you, a barbell, and a coach making sure you move right.

How to Choose a CrossFit Gym

A few criteria to evaluate a CrossFit gym in Marrakech. First, the coaches: do they hold CrossFit Level 1 certification at minimum? Do they have competition or coaching experience? Second, the programming: do WODs follow a logical cycle or is it random every day? Third, the equipment: are the barbells Olympic quality with good knurling? Are the bumper plates in decent shape? And finally, the ratio: how many people per class? If it is more than 15, coaching will inevitably be diluted.

CrossFit and Injuries: Myth vs Reality

CrossFit gets a bad reputation for injuries. But research shows the injury rate in CrossFit is comparable to running or recreational soccer. roughly 2 to 3 injuries per 1000 hours of practice. Injuries happen when coaching is poor, when athletes load too heavy too fast, or when they sacrifice form for speed. At Dune Training, technique always comes before intensity. Our coaches will stop an athlete who is losing form rather than let them continue with a dangerous movement pattern.

Foundational Movements to Master First

Before you chase muscle-ups and heavy snatches, you need to master the basics. A deep squat with proper knee and hip alignment. A deadlift with a flat back and engaged hamstrings. A strict press overhead with solid trunk stability. A kipping pull-up only after proving you can do 5 strict ones. This respect for progression is what separates a good CrossFit gym from one that will get you hurt. At Dune, you earn the right to add complexity by first demonstrating competence in the fundamentals.

CrossFit and HYROX: The Perfect Pairing

Many of our members do both CrossFit and HYROX at Dune Training. The two disciplines complement each other beautifully. CrossFit builds strength, power, and gymnastic skills. HYROX develops running endurance and the ability to perform under prolonged fatigue. Together, they create a complete athlete who is strong, enduring, and technically sound. We recommend 2 CrossFit and 2 HYROX sessions per week for members who want to do both.

Nutrition for CrossFit in Marrakech

CrossFit is nutritionally demanding. You need enough protein to recover (1.6 to 2 grams per kilo of body weight), carbs to fuel your WODs (rice, pasta, potatoes. all readily available in Marrakech), and quality fats for hormonal health. The advantage of living in Marrakech is the quality of fresh produce: chicken, eggs, vegetables, fruit. all available at fair prices in local markets. You do not need expensive supplements when the base food quality is already solid.

What a Typical CrossFit Week Looks Like

A balanced week at Dune Training for a CrossFit athlete might look like this. Monday: CrossFit WOD with a strength bias. heavy cleans followed by a short conditioning piece. Wednesday: CrossFit with a gymnastics focus. handstand practice, then a bodyweight-heavy AMRAP. Friday: CrossFit with a cardio emphasis. long chipper WOD with rowing and running. Add a Weightlifting session on Tuesday for Olympic lifting technique and a Mobility class on Saturday to address tight spots. Three to four sessions per week is plenty for most people to see serious progress.

What a lot of CrossFit gyms in Marrakech miss is progress tracking. At Dune Training we log everything. Your loads, your times, your benchmark scores. When you retest a Fran or a Grace three months later, you can see in black and white how much you have improved. Without that data you are training blind and never really know if your program is working. Tracking is what turns random sessions into actual measurable progress over time.

A practical tip for anyone starting CrossFit: invest in proper shoes from day one. Nike Metcon or Reebok Nano are the standards. They have a flat stable sole for lifting and enough flexibility for running. Avoid traditional running shoes. they are too soft and unstable under load. If your wrists bother you during overhead movements, a pair of wrist wraps for around 100 MAD makes a real difference. Small investments in the right gear pay off immediately in comfort and safety.
